The APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) lets holders enter 16 APEC economies visa-free or fast-track, including China, Japan, Korea, Australia and Singapore.
For China: Chinese citizens enjoy fast clearance across the economies; foreign cardholders get dedicated lanes, multiple entries and 60-day stays in China (by nationality).
Eligibility: mainly frequent business travellers to APEC economies (executives, corporate road warriors), reviewed by the national APEC authority.
Process: apply to your national ABTC authority → background and business-need review → endorsement by each economy → card issuance (about 3-6 months total).
Advantages: no visa fees, multiple entries, dedicated fast lanes, longer stays (mostly 60-90 days) - major gains for business efficiency.
Note: the ABTC is not a work permit - no working in China on it; stays must match genuine business purposes.
The APEC Business Travel Card is a magic card granting "one card, sixteen economies". Holders move freely across most APEC economies visa-free.
APEC is the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, with 21 economies including China, Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and the US. The card is the "passport" within APEC.
Its biggest benefits: no visa, dedicated lanes, five-year validity. At airports, cardholders use APEC fast lanes, saving much queuing time.
Which economies? Currently sixteen support it, including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Chile, Peru and Russia.
Note: the US and Canada, as "transitional members", offer limited convenience - the US mainly provides expedited interview scheduling, not visa-free entry.
Who can apply? Mainly senior managers and frequent business travellers. Individuals generally cannot; companies apply through local foreign-affairs or commerce departments.
Conditions: the applicant is a company employee, usually executive or senior business staff; the firm does foreign trade or investment; clean criminal record.
Process: the company submits documents to the local foreign-affairs office, which reviews and forwards to the Foreign Ministry, which seeks approval from each economy. About 4-6 months total.
Fee: the Ministry charges a moderate amount for Chinese citizens; given the convenience of 16 visa-free economies, value is excellent.
The card is valid five years and renewable. Good entry-exit records smooth the renewal.
Cautions: the card does not replace a work visa - only business activity abroad, no employment; and stay limits (usually 60-90 days) apply.
For frequent Asia-Pacific business travellers, the APEC card is the best-value "visa solution".
In short: a must for business travellers - one card, Asia-Pacific on the go.
