You can explore China with zero Chinese - three tools do the work: a translation app, a map app and the QR scanner.
Translation: Google Translate does not work in China; use Youdao Translator, Baidu Translate or Apple built-in translate (photo, conversation, live captions); WeChat translates too.
Core app stack: Gaode/Baidu Maps (navigation and discovery), Didi (rides), Ctrip/Meituan (hotels, tickets, delivery), Alipay (payment and transport codes). Install from the English app store.
Universal phrases (pair with a translator): "hello", "thank you", "how much", "I want this one", "a receipt please" - pinyin versions land better than English.
Ride-hailing: long-press the map to set the destination in Didi, or have hotel staff/your host write the Chinese address to show the driver. Ordering: photograph the neighbour table dish, or check recommended dishes on the map app; big restaurants offer English or picture menus.
Mindset: Chinese people are generally warm and patient with foreigners - a smile, pointing and a translation app go a long way.
