Marrying a Chinese citizen or joining family in China is handled by the Q visa: Q1 (long-term reunion, convert to a residence permit after entry) and Q2 (short-term visits up to 180 days).
Marriage registration: the foreign spouse provides a passport, a single-status certificate (issued and legalised/notarised by the home country) and a medical check, registered at the civil affairs bureau of the Chinese spouse hukou city - certificate issued on the spot.
Residence after marriage: with the marriage certificate, apply for a private affairs residence permit, usually valid one year and renewable; materials include the marriage proof, spouse invitation letter and accommodation registration.
Family reunion: direct relatives (spouse, parents, minor children) can apply for a Q visa for long-term stay; Q1 holders register a residence permit within 30 days of arrival.
Notes: marriage laws differ by country - legalise your single-status certificate per the Chinese embassy requirements; if your home country must recognise the marriage, extra notarisation and translation apply.
Children education: foreign children with residence permits may attend international or regular schools per local policy.
