China has the largest high-speed rail network in the world, reaching nearly every city - the most convenient long-distance transport for foreign visitors. Second class is comfortable and cheap; first class gives more space.

Booking: the official channel is the 12306 website and app (with an English version) - foreign passports can register and buy. International editions of Trip.com and Qunar also work. Tickets open 14 days ahead; book early for popular lines.

Collection and boarding: use the passport at self-service machines or ticket windows (paper tickets still serve as receipts), then scan the passport at the gates - no printed ticket required.

Transfers: major stations have convenient transfer channels so you do not exit and re-enter; allow 30-40 minutes for a connection.

Rules: tickets are real-name - the name must match your ID; smoking is banned on trains (heavy fines and possible blacklist); cabin baggage is limited to 20 kg with total dimensions under 160 cm.
