China has visa-exemption agreements with many countries and offers unilateral visa-free entry to some; 24/72/144-hour transit waivers are available at many cities for eligible transit passengers.
Transit waiver essentials: a valid onward ticket to a third country, passport valid 6+ months, entry at designated ports, and staying within the permitted region. The waiver cannot be extended.
Whether you qualify depends on your nationality and purpose — policies change often. Always verify on the official National Immigration Administration website before you travel.
The 2026 visa-free policies come in two types: "unilateral visa-free" (China unilaterally allows citizens of certain countries to enter without a visa) and "transit visa-free" (stay visa-free in designated cities while transiting to a third country). Always check the National Immigration Administration website - policies can change anytime.
Unilateral visa-free countries (examples): ordinary passport holders of France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan (resuming) and others can enter visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, family visits and business (no work). The official list prevails.
Transit rules (144 hours/6 days): applies at 40+ ports including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Chongqing, Hangzhou and Xi an; you need a connecting ticket to a third country within 144 hours and must stay within the designated city/region. You cannot leave the permitted area.
Hainan policy: citizens of 59 countries can enter Hainan visa-free for up to 30 days (groups or individuals), entering and exiting via Hainan ports. Ideal for a dedicated Hainan holiday.
Hong Kong/Macau: entering the mainland via HK/Macau still generally needs a mainland visa unless you qualify for visa-free; HK and Macau residents have special arrangements.
Important: visa-free does not mean "stay freely". Respect the stay limit and do not engage in activities beyond your entry purpose (no working on a tourist visa-free entry); border officers may check return tickets and accommodation - carry them.
To verify eligibility: check your country embassy website or the National Immigration Administration site with your nationality and purpose - do not trust online rumours.
A special reminder: visa-free policies are dynamic - a country can be added to or removed from the list due to reciprocity or diplomatic reasons. Re-confirm your eligibility within a week of departure. At entry, border officers ask your purpose - answer consistently with what you declared; proactively show return tickets and hotel bookings for smoother passage.
