Hainan offers 30-day visa-free entry to ordinary passport holders of 59 countries, limited to Hainan province. Eligible purposes include tourism, family visits, business, conferences and sports (expanded beyond tourism since 2024).
Ports of entry: Haikou Meilan, Sanya Phoenix and Boao airports, plus Haikou and Yangpu seaports. Both groups and individuals qualify; you may travel freely within Hainan but not to other provinces.
Notes: the 30-day waiver cannot be extended; border checks and accommodation registration still apply; to travel onward to the mainland, apply for a proper visa in advance. Follow NIA announcements for the latest list.
Hainan 59-country visa-free policy is among China most open entry policies: citizens of 59 countries with ordinary passports can enter Hainan visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, family visits, business, meetings and exhibitions (no work).
Eligible countries (partial): Russia, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand and more, totalling 59. The list may change - check official sources.
Scope: after entry you should stay within Hainan province, free or with a group; exit via Hainan ports.
How it works: no visa application - just hold a valid passport and (recommended) a return ticket, enter via Hainan airports (Haikou Meilan, Sanya Phoenix, Qionghai Boao) or sea ports; border control stamps you through after identity checks.
Best for: travellers planning a dedicated Hainan holiday (Sanya, Haikou, Wanning surfing, Wuzhishan rainforest), business visitors, and people visiting relatives.
Notes: cannot exceed 30 days - for longer stays apply for another visa in advance; no working in Hainan; to travel beyond Hainan into other provinces, you need another visa (or qualify for transit-free).
Sample routes: Sanya-Yalong Bay-Tianya Haijiao-Nanshan Temple 4-day; Haikou arcade streets-Volcanic Park-Wanlv Garden 2-day; Qionghai-Wanning-Lingshui east-coast drive 3-day. Hainan is warm; winter is peak season - book flights and hotels early.
Itinerary advice: the Hainan island loop drive is the best experience - Haikou (arcade streets, volcanic park) to Wenchang (space launch site, coconut groves) to Wanning (Shimei Bay, Riyue Bay surfing) to Sanya (Yalong Bay, Nanshan) to Wuzhishan (rainforest) and back, about 7-10 days. Renting a car needs an international driving permit or certified Chinese licence; EV chargers are spreading along the route. Pack T-shirts for winter but bring a light jacket for mornings and evenings.
A clarification: among the 59 countries, some citizens also qualify for transit-free or unilateral visa-free; some only for Hainan. For instance, a visitor entering Guangzhou for Shanghai cannot use the Hainan policy; flying directly to Sanya from abroad can. So do not assume "visa-free" means nationwide - always confirm the port and destination first.
