Mark Rowswell (Dashan) was born in Ottawa, Canada, in 1965. He studied Chinese in Canada, then came to Peking University in 1988. A chance skit on CCTV's Spring Festival Gala — one line, "Yulan, open the door!" — made him famous overnight and gave him the Chinese name Dashan.
Dashan does more than speak Chinese; he truly loves Chinese culture and crosstalk. He studied xiangsheng under the master Jiang Kun and became the only foreign crosstalk performer. He has appeared on the CCTV gala over a dozen times, performing skits, crosstalk and hosting.
For 30 years he has bridged Canada and China: hosting bilingual shows, promoting Chinese culture, and in 2012 receiving Canada's Governor General's Award for multicultural contribution. Asked how his Chinese got so good, he says, "Because I genuinely love China."
In 2020 Dashan started a short-video stand-up show about cultural differences, winning tens of millions of fans. Older Chinese grew up with him; young people rediscovered him. A Canadian who won Chinese hearts in the Chinese language.
Dashan (Mark Rowswell, 1965- ), Canadian crosstalk comedian and host, is a household name in China - the "foreign comedian" everyone knows, often called a "China hand". He is among the most beloved foreign faces in China.
Meeting Chinese: he came to Peking University in 1988 to study Chinese language and literature, became a disciple of famed crosstalk master Jiang Kun, and in 1989 performed the crosstalk Night Return on the CCTV New Year gala. The line "Yulan, open the door, it is Dashan" made him famous overnight, and the name "Dashan" stuck.
Crosstalk achievements: he repeatedly appeared on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, performing crosstalk and skits with masters like Jiang Kun and Tang Jiezhong, speaking Chinese so fluently people forgot he was foreign. He also performs kuaiban (rhythm clapper) and pingshu (storytelling).
Beyond "Dashan": he hosted shows like Dashan Talks and Follow Dashan to Canada, promoted Sino-Canadian exchange, received the Order of Canada in 2006, and was nominated for the Friendship Medal in 2021.
His cultural contribution: the rarest quality is "understanding China the Chinese way" - not just speaking the language but grasping its humour, human relations and mindset. His success convinces countless foreigners that mastering Chinese truly opens a new world.
Lesson for learners: Dashan proves the highest level of language learning is not speaking correctly but speaking naturally. He still studies Chinese culture with passion - one of the best international narrators of Chinese stories.
A detail often mentioned: he collects Chinese folk artefacts and his devotion to crosstalk impresses even professionals. He once said: "I never saw myself as a foreigner - just a Beijinger who does crosstalk." That sense of belonging is the most moving power of cross-cultural communication.
