The R visa (Talent Visa) is China's dedicated visa for urgently needed high-end foreign talent: academicians, leading entrepreneurs, renowned scholars, heads of major research projects. Approved applicants typically receive 5-10 year multi-entry visas, with spouses and minor children eligible for matching visas.
Application path: your employer or sponsor applies for talent recognition with the local work-permit authority; once approved you get a "Foreign High-end Talent Confirmation Letter" (or equivalent), which you use at a Chinese embassy to get the R visa. Many cities run one-stop service windows guiding the whole chain.
Once inside China, R-visa holders can easily obtain work permits and long-term residence permits — often 5 years — and some cities fast-track them to permanent residence. They also get dedicated channels at airports and stations.
Not sure you qualify? Check the local "Foreigners Working in China Classification Standards" (A-class talent) document or ask the HR of a prospective employer. A-class covers high salaries (typically ¥600k+/year), PhD plus experience, international awards, research achievement and more.
